Report
on 1812 Spring Event at the Fort
Just a note to say thank you for joining us for our first Spring
Event! The weather was glorious and I think everything looked beautiful
at Historic Fort Mims.
The USA Archeological Excavation at the East Gate was a popular
event and visitors enjoyed seeing what was happening. Greg Waselkov,
Bonnie Gums and others had a great deal of information for the crowd, as well
as an informative display and books on hand!
Jim Parker gave an excellent presentation about Fort Montgomery as
well as telling about the many artifacts recovered from that site. His
display of artifacts was great and was viewed by many!
Many thanks to Greg and Jim for their work and participation in
making this a successful event.
'The Historic and Medicinal Plant 'talk' and tour given by
botanist Fred Nation was delightful! Many local plants were shown to
participants and the type and use of the plants provided a great
outdoor learning experience. It was a perfect morning for soaking in
nature!
The living history and 'Ambush at Bashi Creek' was well done,
crafters provided pottery, wool spinning, oak basket making, Cedar buckets,
corn shuck dolls and flint napping and other demonstrations. Poarch Creek
Indian Basket weavers were another addition to the day. A
consultant from Oklahoma was there helping them learn more about River
Cane basketry.
On Sunday, Robert Thrower, Cultural Director from Poarch, was
present in his official 'native' garb. The outfit was beautifully made,
colorful and beaded. He gave a short presentation to the crowd about his
attire and the Creek language.
Nick Warren, Director of the Baldwin County Bicentennial Park,
gave an informative talk to the crowd about the War of 1812; local historian,
Tom Robinson, talked about how the war affected this area; Steve Thomas made a
presentation about these subjects on Sunday.
The band, Kracker Dan, was outstanding and entertained us all
weekend with wonderful music! The wonderful mule-drawn wagons were enjoyed by
all age groups! A little glimpse into the past was lots of fun - real
'horse' power!
Thanks to all who attended and I hope you liked the progress that
you saw on the blockhouse and in the overall appearance of the site, the
attention of participants to be 'period correct', and the support of the many
visitors for this first-time event. Special thanks to the Ft Mims Chapter
DAR and the Stockton Five Arts Club for their participation of drinks and baked
goods. Special thanks to those working the concession stands, too.
Everything was great!
FMRA will continue to move forward to accomplish several goals
before the 200th anniversary next year. Make your plans to attend the Fort Mims
Re-enactment and Living History weekend on August 25 & 26, 2012.
Best Regards to all, Claudia
