In Memory of June Mary Whiting Slaughter

June 14, 1917- July 14, 2012

Mrs. June Slaughter promoted Ft Mims for over six decades. She moved to Tensaw with her husband and children in1945 and organized the Ft Mims Chapter DAR in 1949. She was responsible for the State of Alabama Parks and Conservation Department coming to locate the site in the 1950's and she continued to work throughout her lifetime to gain recognition for Fort Mims. She was a charter member of the Ft Mims Restoration Association and remained active on the board. "Miss June" never missed attending a re-enactment since their beginnings in 1983-84. She sewed her own clothing for the event and loved talking with visitors to share her knowledge of the site. She lived a happy, active and wonderful 95 years.
